    First, the “Features in development”/Suggestions forum is closed to new topics/replies, so it is impossible to post suggestions there like your recent blog post asks. So this is a combination suggestion and customization tutorial post.

    I am moving my organization’s ClimateDepot.com website to WordPress using the WP-Drudge theme, but we need a 4th column on the homepage for widgets. I was able to accomplish this fairly easily by using a child theme and tweaking a couple files. Here’s how to do it if anyone else is interested:

    Add the following code to your child theme’s functions.php file:

    register_sidebar( array(
    'id' => 'column-4',
    'name'=>'Sidebar Column',
    'description' => 'Sidebar column on the homepage',
    'before_widget' => '',
    'after_widget' => '',
    'before_title' => '',
    'after_title' => '',

    Copy the existing index.php file to your child theme, and then insert the following code below the div for column-3:

    <div id="column-4" class="link-col">

    <?php dynamic_sidebar(‘Sidebar Column’) ?>

    Add the following CSS to the “Additional CSS” field in the Advanced Settings tab of the ‘WP-Drudge options’ menu on the WP dashboard:

    .link-col {width: 27.6%; float: left; overflow: hidden}
    #column-4 {width: 16.6%; float: left; overflow: hidden}

    This is how it will look: http://www.climatedepot.com.php53-13.ord1-1.websitetestlink.com/

    Since it is a fairly simple modification, it would be great if it was included as an option to toggle on or off in the next major WP-Drudge theme release.

    PROPER Web

    turnout… thanks for the heads up on the closed forum. Not sure why that was the case but it’s back open and I’ve moved this there.

    We’ve toyed with the idea of creating different column numbers and we’re still deliberating on that. I really appreciate you posting the steps on how to make that happen, though, I’m sure other folks will get use out of it. This was also be reverse-engineered to change the layout to 2 columns.
